Vivianite is a naturally occurring mineral that forms in environments rich in decomposing organic material. It is best known for its beautiful blue to blue-green coloration, which can deepen or change when exposed to air and oxidation.

Among oddity and natural-history collectors, vivianite has earned the eerie nickname “corpse crystal” because it can naturally form on or around bones, especially in environments where organic remains are decomposing. The association with human and animal remains gives these specimens an especially macabre appeal to collectors of death related natural history.
